it was hot enough that jackets and gloves were excused
This is more of a journal entry than a blog post. It’s nice to have a spot to write down the little things that happen in our everyday lives so that we are able to look back on it later on.
It was a busy weekend for us, and a hot one. The small squeaky kid was entered to ride in 4 classes in the fair, but in the end we stayed only for two. It was just too hot. The ponies and riders were done and worn out early. My little 3 year old neice rode her pony, but I showed up too late. She placed first in her class, got lots of ahhhhs, and I missed it! Next time. Squeaky took home two ribbons too and was quite happy with herself. It was the neice’s first show and squeaky’s second, so a good job was done by all. And did I mention how hot it was?
We went home, some friends of the girls came over for a sleepover and we spent most of the time hiding from the heat, though there was a visit to the lake for some swimming after dinner that night.
I had plans to accomplish much more this weekend, but it was just too unpleasant outside. The humidity is awful. Even the dog prefers the basement, where it’s cool.
I hope it rains soon. Our garden needs it and the heat needs to break, a little.

What a great day, wish you could have enjoyed it more. Yes this heat is oppressive, we finally had a day of rain and thunderstorms, but it didn’t seem to help the humidity and the heat is back this morning. I guess I should be thankful for what we did have. It’s been so hot here even the established trees are losing their leaves and dying. It’s just crazy.
Guess I should have been prepared for it after we didn’t really get a winter this year. Doesn’t make me like it any better..
I do not like the extreme heat either – in fact I do not like moderate heat – give me 60s and 70s and I am a happy girl (I know I should be talking celcius but I am still a farenheit girl). Went to the Blues Festival in Windsor yesterday, and like your fair, it was too hot, only stayed for a couple of acts. Congrats to Squeaky kid, she looks so cute on that horse!
I’m not a heat lover either. I could happily be a cave dweller as soon as it goes over 26C. Funny, I was the sandwich generation that learned some imperial and some metric. I know my weight in lbs, but buy meat by the kg, know the weather in celcius but cook in farenheit, know measures for cooking in either format, but know water measures in metric. I have no idea what a quart, pint or gallon is. And distances are all metric..
Kids and horses are such a great match! The heat does put a damper on things though. If we don’t ride before 10am here in California, it’s just too miserable. Luckily, we live just two hours from the Pacific Ocean, though, so we take frequent weekend trips over the Coast Range to our favorite and coolest ride.
That sounds like fun!
I think you should move over here. We generally get the same mild temps all year round. Extreme heat is like a dream. Actually so is sunshine at the moment!! š
I totally think I should move to Ireland too! My husband says his family was kicked out generations ago for horse-thieving, but I think that’s common lore over here for any families with Irish ancestry.
My in-laws used to visit occasionally and I would love to some day. Your temperatures are much more to my liking. Though I have to say that ours don’t normally get this high and stay this high for so long.

If only I could send the rain here over to you! Glad that you have let the heat stop everything, though. My daughter and I both love horseriding – she’s going to be doing some next week (and interesting birthday party for one of her friends!).

Our local fair is in August too – the older kid has stuff to do for it. Now, after being at this other fair, the youngest kid is asking for a calf to show next year. I knew there would be a calf in our future at some point. My husband used to show at the fairs. Kids look so cute in their little white shirts and pants at the cattle shows. I’m kinda excited about it myself.
