slow living update – January 2013

030

Happy Groundhog Day. It’s snowing here, so there isn’t much hope that the rodent saw his shadow this morning. I’m not opposed to a long winter at this point.

January was a hectic and tiring month. I won’t lie – I’m glad it’s over and we are heading into two quiet months before spring and summer start. At least that is what I am telling myself. Often what I plan on being quiet months and what they actually turn out to be are very different.

This is the first weekend in four weekends that we have been free of moving anything or cleaning in the anticipation of moving. Aside from sorting out our garage so that I can park the car in it, we are at the end of all of that. My in-laws have been moved into their new house, the leftover furniture and goods at the farm have been sorted and distributed, we have moved into the farm and my brother and sister-in-law are now living in our old house. Our plan is to take over the world one corner at a time (because all three families now live in adjoining properties).

I’m following the example at Slow Living Essentials again this month, and using her categories to summarize my month and list some things I’d like to accomplish.

{Nourish}:

For a lot of this month we were fed by family and friends and were grateful for every last bit of it. On our moving day my in-laws provided chili, a neighbour brought pulled pork, salad and buns, my mom brought jambalaya and another neighbour brought baked goods. We fed an army of workers and managed leftovers for several days. Can’t beat that.

The rest of the month we did our best, but I admit to a frozen pizza or two. We were in survival mode. Even the small kid was happy when we started really cooking again – she said that it was so good that she even ate all of the green beans – and she doesn’t like green beans.

{Prepare}:

The only preparations made this month were preparations to move. A lot of moves. Therefore, a lot of packing.

{Reduce/Reuse/Repurpose/Repair}:

There were four car/SUV loads of stuff taken to the charity shop in January. While I see that as a good thing, I also see it as a shame I had accumulated that amount of stuff and not dealt with it. There was also a fair amount of garbage generated this month. I could have done better with that.

There was one good thing to report here, but the credit goes to my mom. When she moved last spring, she purchased 40 or more of those big totes with lids and has been loaning them out to everyone she knows that needs to move. We were the fifth family to use them, my brother used them after me, and another friend of my mother’s is about to borrow them for her move.

{Green}:

I got nothin’.

{Grow}:

Nope.

{Create}:

Another pass.

{Discover}:

I did actually finish a few books this month, mostly because I wanted to concentrate on something other than packing for a few minutes each day. Right now we have 30 or so unpacked boxes of books sitting in the basement until we have someplace to put them. The new house has a formal living room, which we probably don’t have a lot of use for, so the dad’s plan is to build in some bookshelves and make it into a library. That has always been a bit of a dream for me. A room with a fireplace, library shelves, leather chairs and an old dog to look up at me adoringly. All I lack now are the library shelves. And I’m not sure the dog and I adore each other that much. It’s more of a tolerant relationship.

{Enhance – community}:

We put out a call for help from friends and family this month, and 20 or so helped us move. I love that the responses were “Of course!” and “What can we bring?”. We had enough help that we got the furniture arranged the way we wanted it and settled in with some food and drinks and watched the hockey game. Another couple that came for the weekend (thanks, Sara and Mike) said that they loved visiting because it is so real here. I think that means she’s noticed that I am comfortable enough to yell at my kids in front of them.

{Enjoy}:

Now that it is all over, we are prepared to start making new memories and enjoying our new home. We already have memories in this place, but now they will be from a different perspective. We’re settled.

Yay! So glad you’re settling in and feeling like you’re “home” again.

  2. I have the exact same library dream.

Congratulations on finishing your moves… and wow! so much help. You have a great group of friends.

  3. You know I actually forgot it was ground hog day today. It’s snowing but bright here, I will have to check later and see if Phil saw his shadow. I am done with winter.

I love the pictures of your home, your kitchen table is exactly my taste 🙂 even with the boxes around the home looks so comfortable.

On the subject of all the stuff you gave away, look at it this way it may help someone else to save money and not have to buy something new.

I’m not surprised you had plenty of help, glad you had plenty to make it a smooth move. So how do you plan to finish conquering the world?

    • That table came out of my grandpa’s workshop, I think. My mom used it for a few years and we have had it for 18 or so now. I like “used” stuff.

I do hope that other people get some use out of our unwanted stuff. We don’t buy a lot new (as you can probably see), so I like the thought of passing things along.

  4. Well done on your move – I guess you have done something positive on the green front by having your family close by 🙂
I’d love to have enough space for a library – enjoy!

    • I hadn’t thought of it that way – I guess we are the ultimate recyclers. I’ve owned 2 houses, lived in 3 – all previously occupied by family, and occasionally occupied by multiple generations. At different times, my grandparents and my husband’s grandmother have lived with us.

  5. Congrats on finishing your move! The idea of your library plans is simply lovely… I’d add a cat curled up on my lap purring contentedly to the fantasy. Lucky you, it soon won’t be just a fantasy!

    • I’m not sure it will be too soon – but I look forward to the library too.

And the cat is just a given. Ours is curled up happily right now in front of the fire in the den. It doesn’t feel like home without a cat in it.

Congratulations on your move! I love the library idea. It sounds wonderful!

  7. Fairy says:

Well done on the move. Friends and family helping each other and all pitching in – that is what life is all about, isn’t it?

Enjoy the new house and the special memories that are sure to flow.

  8. Ange says:

{Green} Borrowing reusable totes rather than buying some or using boxes that still need recycling? Or am I stretching things too much?
{Create} You mentioned it yourself, you are creating your army to take over the world! Creating the headquarters, perhaps, by all being to close together!

Congratulations on surviving the move(s?). It looks like a fantastic spot, and a roomy house! I think we have the same carpet as you!

  9. Its good to have you back I have missed your posts – it is lovely to see you settled into your new home and from your picture you would think you had always lived there it looks like a proper home should do – homely.
I think your mum is very enterprising and should start a hire business! The Library idea is my dream too – perhaps your mum might want to become chief librarian and loan your books out too!
You will have lots of new memories to make in this house and I hope you have a good housewarming party with your family and friends to start them off.

    • We probably will have a big housewarming party – but we might wait for warmer weather so that we can bbq. And I think mom should rent the boxes out too – might as well recover some costs, though I think she enjoys helping by lending them out.

And thanks! I think the house was already pretty homey when we moved in, making it that much easier to fit right in.

  10. no slow living this month – maybe in February

  11. While every move is nerve-wracking it seems as though you had lots of friends and family to help. I’m so glad you’re settled and I can just picture your new library….Diane

  12. Welcome back! You deserve 6 weeks of hibernation.

  13. thebeadden says:

Just reading this made me tired! Glad you’re all moved in.

  14. Deb Weyrich-Cody says:

    Welcome home!: )

  15. Barbara Good says:

Oh boy Heidi, that really is a lot of moving but glad to hear you’re settled. I too dream of library to retreat to. I’m missing several of those key elements though. I love the ‘comfortable’ line. I hope that’s how my friends feel when I get stroppy at the kids in front of them

  16. Christine says:

Happy housewarming! All the best for making many new memories in your new place. 🙂

  17. Lynne Ayers says:

Only weeks ago you were probably in dread of the whole moving thing and, look, now it’s over! Enjoy the comfort of your new home.

  18. The library sounds awesome! My dream come true in your house… weird. Right down to the doggie adoration/tolerance. Glad you made it home again 🙂

  19. Kara says:

    Hi Heidi!
Glad it all went smoothly and well for you all – all three families! We have plans to move (in about 5 years time) and I suspect that we will have a huge amount to donate as well when we do. Every so often I have a clean out and get rid of bits and bobs and then people “gift” you things that you just got rid of as they noticed you didn’t have one….
Love the picture of the girls reading!! – K xx
