a visit from the city cousins & some s’mores

We’ve got a full house for the weekend – the city cousins have come for a visit (and because they are competing in a local highland dance competition). The house is quiet at the moment; they’ve gone to the Scottish festival for the morning (and they took our kids too – yay!).

We don’t have much planned, just lots of kids playing, jumping on the trampoline, riding ponies and possibly swimming in the bay, if it gets hot. And if the weather holds, we’ll have a bonfire tonight. Maybe even some sparklers. Everybody likes sparklers.

Our favourite bonfire snack is, of course, S’Mores. But we cheat..

Easy Bonfire S’Mores

  • marshmallows
  • chocolate covered digestive biscuits

Toast marshmallows over coals. Sandwich one marshmallow between two chocolate covered digestive biscuits (chocolate side in the middle, of course). Eat.

small things – lucky strike

One leaf is for FAITH.

The second is for HOPE.

The third is for LOVE.

And the fourth is for LUCK!

The small squeaky kid found a four leaf clover yesterday. After spending a few minutes on-line looking for possible projects for it, we discovered that they are often the result of a genetic defect in the root of the white clover plant. Therefore where there is one, there should be more. So we went on the hunt for more and found a whole patch of them. We’ve got them pressed in the pages of a few large books, awaiting some future crafty inspiration.

If you would like to find your own 4-leaf clover, or learn how to grow more once you find some, read this. Good luck!

when life gives you garden dirt.. make lemon-olive oil gardener’s hand scrub

This stuff really works! And it makes your hands really soft. Just rub it in the little nooks and crannies that all of the garden dirt got stuck in, and before you know it, you have baby-soft office job type hands all over again.

And bonus hint: I sat on the edge of the tub and massaged it into my legs and feet just before my shower and had great results. My feet and legs are now pedicure-at-the-spa smooth.

Lemon-Olive Oil Gardener’s Hand Scrub

  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • Juice of 1/2 a lemon
  • lemon zest

Mix it all together in a jar and store in the fridge to keep it fresh (it does have real juice in it). Use it anywhere on your body that needs a little scrub, moisturizer or general healthy glow.
